The Tattoo Removal UK Process

The Journey of Tattoo Removal

Put at its simplest, laser removal uses various laser types to rapidly heat tattoo ink in order to break it up into small particles ready to be flushed out by the immune system it’s entirely non-invasive with manageable aftercare and incredibly short recovery periods. How many sessions it takes varies by machine and operator, we’ll look a bit more at both next time, today we’ll take a look at the process so you know what to expect.

Initial consultation

The initial consultation is the time to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable. We'll go over the machines and their settings, discuss your end goal and give you a quote based on the amount of time required each session. Once you're happy to proceed we will do a test patch to see which power setting is best for your skin type. We'll also book you in for your first removal session for the following week.

The removal session

A typical removal session ranges from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the size as well as the number of colours. You'll be sent a medical check by text or email prior to your session. The check is a short questionnaire to ensure there are no adverse effects. If you fill the check in prior to arrival we can begin the laser removal straight away.

The session itself is a fairly straightforward affair. The machine is set based on your test patch and the laser is passed over the tattoo in its entirety. The termal impact caused by the laser pulse will turn the tattoo temporarily white; an affect know as frosting. Frosting is evidence that the laser has hit the ink and broken part of it up.

The procedure does cause some pain, often linked to a hot elastic band snapping on your skin. The paid is completely manageable, especially for shorter sessions. We do offer a frost cooling machine treatment to numb the area to help with the pain.

After a removal session

After the session we'll walk you through the aftercare - as a non-invasive procedure it's fairly straightforward - aloe vera to ease any pain and savlon to keep the area clean. There is a chance that there will be some redness and blistering in the first few weeks, which is normal.

We book in repeat sessions straight after the first with 5 weeks in between for full recovery. The tattoo will continue to fade after a session for up to 6 months, but we want to hit it more frequently than that to compound the effect and bring down the overall time.

Our Laser Removal Machines

Pico-focused Laser

Unlike other laser machines which pulse lasers at a much lower frequency, our state-of-the-art laser system uses innovative laser frequencies which rapidly pulses laser energy into the skin. This new method of laser removal is significantly better for the health of your skin as the laser energy causes the ink particles in a tattoo to break and disperse more so than any other laser technology used for tattoo removal, causing very little heat build-up which can lead to burning.

Older laser machines use photo-thermal energy to target the tattoo, which is slower, requires more sessions and in most circumstances can’t remove colour tattoos.

Our laser system uses photo-mechanical energy combined with ultra-short bursts which are more energy-efficient and requires less heat. This process means a tattoo can be removed in significantly fewer sessions, cause little to no damage to your skin and allows us to remove all colours.

The different frequencies and wavelengths also allow us to remove almost all tattoo colours, whereas older and more traditional laser systems are unable to remove colour tattoos. The Pico breaks up using pressure waves creating smaller particles which is easier for body to remove.

Skin Air Cooling Machine

The Newest Generation of Cryotherapy System Unlike other cooling methods, such as contact cooling, cryogen spray or icepacks, the Cool plus can cool the epidermis before, during and after the laser energy has been applied, without interfering with the laser beam. The Cool plus decreases the skin temperature quicker, with less risk of skin burns and keeps a constant dosage throughout the entire treatment time.

The cool plus features cooled air for efficient pain treatment, swelling reduction and muscle re -laxation. The system enables Cryotherapy with precise placement and at a constant dosage every time. The device uses no consumables and delivers high power. This enables a quick decrease in superficial skin temperature, while maintaining the ability to operate all day.

Q-switched ND YAG Laser

The Q-Switched neodymium YAG Laser is a crystal which is used as a laser medium. The neodymium ion provides the laser activity and the Nd: YAG laser carries the capability of reaching much deeper layers of skin as compared to other types of lasers. The Q-Switched neodymium YAG Laser is perfect for removing tattoos, age spots, sunspots, and freckles. The technology is also used for skin rejuvenation, oil control, and skin pore improvement. YAG laser can be used for hair removal in any location.

Light blasting principle is used here when the high peak energy pulses of light of specific wavelengths get absorbed by the pigments in the skin. An instantaneous blast shatters the pigmentation particles into fragments which are eliminated from the body by the lymphatic system.

With adjustable wavelengths, brightness and zoom spot size, Q Switched neodymium YAG Laser is a safe and effective technique to use. Advantages include a variety of wavelengths, high peak power and a perfect aiming beam with a high-quality laser source. These laser techniques carry the unmatched ability to target skin pigment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a consultation cost?
All consultations are free of charge.

If you would like to cancel or rearrange your weekday appointment we require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice; for Saturday and Sunday appointments we ask for 7 days’ notice.
Why is your machine better than other companies?
Many companies use out-of-date machines that take more sessions to remove a tattoo. They operate old Nd:Yag models (the most common machines used) which have low max power settings that then leads to a higher number of sessions. In many cases the tattoo will fade but not disappear completely.

Our Nd:Yag is more powerful than the forementioned, which allows for a progressive increase in power output in each session until the tattoo goes.

The Pico is even more efficient using pressure rather than heat, to break ink in a more effective manner. What this means for you is fewer sessions, less pain and a better result!
Why is your quote higher than others?
Amongst operators in the North West with comparable removal technology, we are the most competitively priced.

Our quotes are higher than operator’s using outdated machines. As discussed above, these old machines are radically inefficient in comparison to the modern lasers we use. The take home for you is that although individual sessions are more expensive, the reduced number facilitated by our machines means the whole removal process works out cheaper.
Can you treat all colours?
Our laser system can remove almost all colours for most clients, but it can be dependent on the skin health of the individual and how deep the colour is.

Some colours are harder to fully remove than others, but in the rare circumstances where we’re unable to fully remove a coloured tattoo, we would recommend considering a further cover-up tattoo.
How does your pricing work?
Our pricing is based on the amount of time it takes to complete a session. This is obviously tied to the size of the tattoo, but also how many colours there are in the tattoo. Another factor can be how complex it is (more colours and greater complexity, then requires longer sessions).
Does tattoo removal hurt?
If you can sit through a tattoo session, you can certainly sit through a tattoo removal session. The session is generally 20% of the time that it takes to put the tattoo on your skin. We can stop when you need and break whenever suits.
How many sessions will it take?
It’s impossible to say exactly how many sessions it will take; it varies too much from person to person. As well as the laser, removal times are also affected by the immune system. The better your body is at flushing ink out, the fewer sessions it will take.

What we can do is a comparative analysis of session numbers in comparison to weaker machines. Conservatively session numbers are reduced as follows:

High-powered Nd:Yag – 50% fewer sessions
Multi-wavelength Pico – 80% fewer sessions
Will there be scarring?
In general, there should be no scarring, this is especially true on the Pico machine (since it’s shorter pulse duration causes less thermal damage). In some cases, there is very minor scarring or lightening of the skin, but this is normally very subtle and hardly visible. It is very important for you to follow the aftercare documentation, as poor aftercare can create scarring.
Are there any health risks with laser tattoo removal?
Your skin will most likely be red and feel like it has a mild sunburn. This typically goes away after a couple of hours. There may also be some bruising. At times and with certain inks, there may be mild blistering that usually heals in about a week. After each treatment, you will be given instructions on how to care for your treated area.
Can I get a cover-up tattoo after the treatment?
Absolutely! Tattoo Removal Manchester was born out of the need to fade tattoos ready for a cover at Flesh Tattoo. A large portion of our business is preparing customers for a cover-up whether that be full removal or fading parts of the tattoo.
